Riviera MayaBetween Forest and Sea
Begin the journey47 selected photographs / 7 chapters
From the Caribbean shore to inland Maya sites, these photographs move between forest, carved stone and clear water. Changing light connects the sequence: New Year fireworks, a coastal dawn, sunbeams in cenotes and the colours of the reef.

At the Water's Edge

December 2023 – January 2024
The coast changes with the light: palms reflected in a pool, fireworks over the sea, a silver path of moonlight and a thin gold horizon before sunrise. A roadside cat in Playa del Carmen brings the sequence back to ground level.

Stone in the Forest

At Cobá, trees surround stepped stone platforms and the long walls of a ballcourt. Wildlife occupies the same frame: a spider monkey among branches, turkeys on the forest floor and vultures opening their wings above the masonry.
Among the branches
A spider monkey (Ateles sp.) hangs among leafy branches in the forest canopy.
The ballcourt
Stone rings face each other across a ballcourt at Cobá.
Pyramid in the forest
A stone pyramid rises through the trees at Cobá.
Wings over stone
Vultures spread their wings on the upper stones of a pyramid at Cobá.
Ocellated turkeys
Blue heads and iridescent feathers distinguish two ocellated turkeys (Meleagris ocellata) on the forest floor.
A small forest temple
A small temple stands on a stepped stone platform among the trees at Cobá.

Tulum Above the Sea

The Temple of the Wind stands above turquoise water. Inland from the cliff edge, columns and doorways frame quieter views of the ruins. Iguanas rest in the shade and on pale limestone, while the coast opens beneath a leaning palm.

Beneath the Surface

Open sky gives way to blue shafts of light beneath the water. Divers appear as small silhouettes among submerged formations; closer views reveal folds, ridges and curtains of mineral deposits. Above the water, bats cluster against the cave ceiling.
An opening to the sky
At water level, limestone walls frame an opening to the sky.
Light through the cenote
Sunlight falls through the cenote water around distant divers.
Blue light
Shafts of sunlight illuminate submerged rock beneath the rippled surface.
Into the passage
Seen from behind, a diver passes between tall cave formations.
Divers in blue
Divers cross the cavern in silhouette, their lights cutting through the blue water.
Stone and sunlight
A hanging cave formation meets the rippled surface above shafts of blue light.
Mineral folds
Pale mineral folds spread across the cavern wall beneath a reflective surface.
Curtains of stone
Long, ribbed cave formations hang like curtains in the torchlight.
Bats overhead
Bats roost in clusters among the formations on the cave ceiling.

Carved in Stone

At Chichén Itzá, broad stairways and rows of columns give way to close details: skulls along the Tzompantli, an open-jawed serpent and weathered animal reliefs. Low sunlight makes the carvings legible in shadow, with El Castillo rising beyond the stonework.
Temple of the Jaguars
Serpent columns frame the upper Temple of the Jaguars at Chichén Itzá, beneath a frieze of jaguars and shields.
Skulls and pyramid

Life on the Reef

Colour and pattern fill the reef: yellow-striped fish, blue-edged angelfish and the open tubes of sponges. A crab, lobster and moray occupy sheltered spaces. Over the sand and reef, a ray and sea turtles bring wider, quieter shapes into the blue.
A flash of yellow
A spotfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellatus) passes between sea fans, its pale body edged with yellow.
Queen angelfish
A queen angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) brings vivid blue and yellow to the reef.

Two porkfish (Anisotremus virginicus), marked by bold black bands and yellow stripes, pass a colourful reef wall.
A wall of fish
A dense school of yellow-striped grunts gathers beside a shaded reef opening.
Over the sand

Reef architecture
The open tubes of a sponge cluster form a close study of rims, pores and warm colour.
Inside a crevice
A crab's large claws and jointed legs emerge from a sheltered gap in the reef.
Porcupinefish
A porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix) swims above the reef, its pale body and fins covered in small dark spots.
